Desert Bar - November, 2009

In March of 2009, the club made a trip to the Nellie E Saloon, a little known place about 30 miles south of Lake Havasu City. It's called "The Desert Bar" by locals and since there are no signs advertising it, you have to know where to turn off State Highway 95 to access the dirt road that leads there.  Some of our older members organized the trip to show some newer members how to get there. They had such a good time that another run there was planned for November, after our 32nd Annual Run to the Sun concluded, to introduce more new locals to this cool place. On the way down, you wouldn't have known that the 32 people in the caravan were street rodders since there were no old cars. The dirt road leading in is 5 miles long and dusty, and is not the kind of road you'd like to be driving your street rod or classic car on. As you approach the site and turn the last corner, the first thing that greets your eyes is the church steeple straight ahead at the end of the road.

After the vehicles were parked, the members made their way across the bridge to the patio area where the band Pirate was setting up for an afternoon of music and dancing. It was a little chilly so the premier spots were somewhere that wasn't in the shade. What a change from a couple of weeks earlier.

A number of changes and improvements at the popular watering hole, include some old vehicles displayed around the site, raised patios and well water that's supplied by a solar powered pump. In fact, the whole place is solar powered since there is no electricity and it's only open until sundown during the winter months. The single most popular change with the ladies is the addition of genuine flush toilets in the ladies' outhouse.

After the band warmed up, it was time for our members to get warmed up too, and dancing was a good way to do that.
